Waiter Chases Man For Leaving Just Rs 45,000 As Tip, Asks For Rs 90,000

Customers frequently leave a little tip for the waiters after eating at a restaurant. Restaurant patrons typically leave a 7–10% tip on their whole bill.

However, a waiter in the French coastal town of Saint-Tropez was supposedly enraged after a customer tipped him “only” 500 euros (about Rs 45,000) after dining at an expensive restaurant where he worked. Here’s what happened after.

The waiter didn’t stop there. He even went to the effort of pursuing the Italian man after he left the restaurant and accusing the client of underpaying him. Nice Matin, a French local newspaper, reported on the amusing but unusual episode.

According to Nice Matin, the nameless waiter was irritated since the customer’s gratuity was barely 10% of the total bill. He went on to explain to the customer that his gratuity should be at least 20% of the cost.

Later, a buddy of the Italian restaurant-goer claimed that the man thought paying the server 500 euros (about Rs 44,000) was adequate, but he was “reprimanded.”

According to the friend, after the waiter chased down the customer after he left the restaurant, the waiter urged him that he could still correct his mistake by paying him 1,000 euros (Rs 90,000) as a tip “because it was more consistent in approaching 20% of the total amount of his bill.”

According to the Nice Matin, following the incident, the Italian man swore he would never visit Saint Tropez again because of the waiter’s pestering, including the extra tipping changes he was required to pay.

Saint Tropez is famous for its thronging crowds and exorbitantly priced restaurants. This small town has received criticism from the general public for being expensive and unwelcoming to travellers.

According to reports, some of the restaurants here have even started wealth-screening guests, with restaurant officials mandating a minimum spend of 5,000 euros (about Rs. 4.4 lakh) for those who seek to dine there.

Tipping is often seen as a way to show appreciation for good service. It allows customers to directly reward individuals who have provided them with a positive experience, whether it’s in a restaurant, hotel, or other service-oriented industry.

However, customers in other nations, like India, are not expected to tip. They are free to pay whatever they wish. Customers do not need to pay waiters any more money at restaurants where a distinct amount of money is allotted for service charges.
