Tan Chuan-Jin apologizes to Jamus Lim

Recently, a speaker, Tan Chaun-Jin, was reported to apologize to WP’s Jamus Lim for using ‘non-parliamentary language’ caught on a hot mic. On Tuesday, July 11, Parliament Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin apologized for using unethical language in his reaction to a speech by Workers’ Party (MP) Member of Parliament (MP) Jamus Lim. The viral video circulated on social networks and is shared by several users. Mr. Tan wrote that when he listens to speeches that are made for everyone, he forms many opinions about them. He said that those were his private thoughts that he muttered to himself and not to anyone. Associate Professor Lim, who is an MP for Sengkang GRC, had reportedly been speaking about the need for an official poverty line to help the poor, needy and disadvantaged people of Singapore, advocating for equal opportunities in education, health care and employment for all. It was believed that in a comment, Professor Lim called out Mr. Tan and accepted his apology. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Singaporean national runner Soh Rui Yong commented on the incident, saying people had sent him videos because of Mr. Tan’s other role as president of Singapore’s National Olympic Council. Soh had previously been fired from the 2023 Asian Games after he made derogatory and derisive comments about others in the public domain. SNOC did not make the details of those comments public. In a post, SOH said it appears TCJ is doing it to express his disagreement with an opposition member of Parliament.

Notably, in September 2021, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan apologized to non-constituent member of parliament Leong Mun Wai of the Singapore Progress party for calling him “illiterate” and questioning his educational abilities.
