‘We live at work’, says a Honduran living in the United States

Yefer Castellanos is one of the thousands of Hondurans who every year risk their lives undertaking the ‘migrant route’ in search of better life opportunities in the United States.

The catracho, who lives in Oklahoma City, shares his daily life through his TikTok account (@yefer_castellanos), mainly his work.

Yefer, 19, works as a house painter, something he shows with great pride in several of his videos published on the Chinese platform.

However, in one of his most recent tiktoks, where he makes tortillas with another young man, he showed what is one of the most difficult parts of living in the United States.

“This is life in the USA, without realizing it you live at work and visit your home,” reads the description that moved users.

“People in Honduras believe that everything is rosy here, but they are enslaved”; “in this country if you don’t work, you don’t eat” and “sometimes I would like to go back, but I remember my goal to improve myself,” are some comments.

Despite the obstacles, the Olimpia and Inter Miami fan assures that he will not stop and will fight for his dreams and goals.

Migration risks

People who undertake the so-called ‘migrant path’ face risks such as: being kidnapped by criminal gangs in Mexico, dying by drowning in the Rio Grande or dying of heat in the desert.

Likewise, many of those who try to reach the United States by boarding the train called ‘the beast’, which goes from Guatemala to the United States, end up mutilated or dead.
