A license plate reader reported the truck on the day of the incident at 4 pm, alerting police. In the parking area in the 6300 block of Richmond Highway, Lemagne pulled over and got out of the U-Haul. At that moment, a police officer got out of his police van and walked towards Lemagne. Based on security video evidence, it is possible to see the precise moment when Lemagne forcibly pushes the police officer into the driver’s seat of the police van by opening the driver’s side door. The policeman’s legs can be seen dangling outside the car, occasionally touching the ground.
Lemagne’s foot is seen on the SUV’s accelerator while the officer is still pressed against the driver’s seat in the officer’s body camera footage. The officer is alarmed when he hears a horn amidst the tense situation and says, “He’s reaching for my gun. He is aiming at my rifle. Lemagne immediately responds by pleading, “Sir, just back off.” Lemagne should stop grabbing the rifle, the officer pleads again. Police officer Christopher Grubb, a seasoned police officer with eight years of service, is shown on the body camera film arriving at the gas station at approximately 4:07 p.m. and spotting the crashed SUV. Grubb can be heard firing at least 18 rounds in nine seconds at the vehicle carrying both Lemagne and the officer involved from their location across the street near the McDonald’s gate. The shooting of Officer Christopher Grubb resulted in the death of Brandon Lemagne.
Brandon Lemagne’s sister, Nechelle Lemagne, expressed reservations about how the police handled the situation, particularly in relation to the rounds that were fired after her brother was removed from the car. She revealed that she had received different reports in an interview with WJLA and that her brother had been shot three times in the face. However, Nechelle Lemagne was unable to immediately respond.
