What happened to David Lunz?
For two years, the case went cold until authorities recovered the murder weapon and received a vital tip from the ex-girlfriend of a man named William Westerman, who confessed to committing the murder with Christopher Lunz, David’s stepson. William received less than 30 years in prison and pleaded guilty. On the other hand, while serving time in prison, Christopher was found guilty. He murdered a convicted child molester one day before committing suicide in his cell. Furthermore, he previously claimed that he was a serial killer of sex offenders and pedophiles. This Thursday, July 12, 2023, an upcoming episode of A Time to Kill on ID is scheduled to chronicle the murder of David Lunz.
While requesting a welfare check, David Lunz’s neighbor allegedly called 911 on the night of March 8, 2003, expressing concern that he had not seen the retired Marine for a while. Authorities found the front door open and a stack of newspapers outside when they arrived at David’s home. Inside the house, the living room was in complete disarray, with overturned chairs, overturned things, and blood stains on the carpet. The bloody trail led into the hallway near the bedroom, where David was found dead in a large quantity of his own blood. The 56-year-old man was shot at point blank range and sustained severe head trauma.
After finding a considerable amount of cash in the house, authorities ruled out a burglary. Given the conditions in the living room, they examined that a fight between the murderer(s) and David Lunz began there. Authorities learned from his supervisor that he was at work on March 6 but did not show up that day while conducting interviews with David’s colleagues. This information was used to determine the time and date of the murder, considering that the victim left work around 5:30 pm on the last day. Also, the medical examiner said that he was killed sometime between then and around 10 p.m.
Meanwhile, Christopher Lunz claimed that his stepfather David Lunz sexually assaulted him and that he was a killer of sex offenders and pedophiles. He was found guilty of first degree murder and other robbery charges.
