We offer the family and friends of Peter Mertens our sincere condolences, knowing that his son Beau will carry on the Mertens name in Victoria racing. Victorian Jockeys’ Association chief executive Matt Hyland also sent his condolences to the Mertens family.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of Peter’s passing and offer our condolences to his family, especially his son Beau. At this extremely terrible time, we are thinking of all of them,” Hyland said. Peter “will be missed by many people at Victorian racing and beyond” because he “was as brave in fighting his disease as he was at the racecourse”.
