Japanese transgender television star Ryuji Higa, better known as Ryuchell, was found dead at the age of 27 in his agent’s office in Tokyo. On July 12, in Shibuya, the unconscious body of the social media personality was found and he was pronounced dead shortly after. Authorities are investigating the cause of death, according to the Japan Times. They are also considering the possibility that they die by suicide. This comes in 2022 after Higa announced that they do not identify as male. They were working very hard on the new image and new music of him, but transphobic people harassed them to such an extent.

Ryuji Higa was born in Okinawa, Japan. Born on September 25, 1995. They moved to Tokyo after graduating from high school and began working in clothing boutiques located in Harajuku. Side by side, they were also active on the Instagram platform and gained a lot of popularity as influencers for championing “gender-kei” fashion.
Higa served as an inspiration for many who wanted to explore the “androgynous” clothing style and wanted to create a new style of genderless beauty, according to news outlet Tokyo Fashion. In 2016, Ryuchell married model and social media personality Tetsuko Okuhira, also known as Peco. They met when they were 18 years old and welcomed their first child in 2018. The duo frequently appeared on various TV shows. In August, Peco and Ryuchell announced their divorce after the former announced that he no longer identified as a man. After that, the social media influencer faced a lot of backlash online.
Higa revealed that they had questioned his image as an “ideal husband” before telling his ex-wife, Peco, while speaking to Very magazine in September 2022. After Peco shared a photo of their son celebrating his fifth birthday, the Ryuchell’s death came just a day later. His and Peco’s son were not in Japan at the time of the social media personality’s death. They returned on July 13.
