WhatsApp, the widely used messaging app owned by Meta, has announced the launch of passcode support for all Android users. This new login method uses your device’s biometric authentication, such as face or fingerprint, instead of insecure SMS-based two-factor authentication.

The move follows Google’s recent push to get users to switch to passcodes. While still in testing for iOS devices, the new feature coming to Android marks a small but significant step toward never having to memorize passwords again. How access codes work
Access keys are based on WebAuthn technology and use two different keys: one stored by the service or website and a private key stored only on your personal device. To log in, you’ll need to authenticate with your phone’s face scanner or fingerprint reader instead of typing a password. If you lose your device, you can still access your passkey through a secondary method such as email or a security key. Major technology companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, and browser makers have embraced passcodes as the future of login security. Password managers like 1Password also support them.
