In recent weeks, a new scam has been circulating on WhatsApp, putting the security of users of this popular messaging application at risk.
Although WhatsApp has been known for its security measures, scammers have found a way to circumvent these protections and carry out their scams.
The new scam involves users receiving a text message with a 6-digit code, apparently intended to log into another account.
Subsequently, the user receives another message, this time coming from the application itself, requesting that the code be shared because it was sent “by mistake.”
The message says: “Hello. Sorry, I sent you a 6-digit code by SMS by mistake, can you pass it on to me? It is urgent“.
The trick is that, by sharing this code, scammers gain access to the WhatsApp account from another device, this allows them to see the user’s contacts, message history and even personal information.
With this information in their hands, criminals pose as the victim to request money from their contacts and, in more serious cases, access bank details or compromised information.
The key recommendation is not to respond to these types of messages and, if you receive them, inform your contacts to prevent possible interactions with scammers.
What to do if I was a victim of the 6-number fraud on WhatsApp?
If you have fallen into the trap and shared the code, there are steps you can take to protect your account, it is essential to notify your contacts about the situation to avoid further victims.
To recover your account, request a WhatsApp to send you a verification code via SMS message, which will help verify your phone number.
Once this code is entered, cybercriminals will lose access and the chat will be automatically closed.
