According to the New York Post, the incident occurred with a student in Brussels, Belgium, who routinely indulged in the practice of preparing a week’s worth of meals on Sundays to lighten his workload during hectic weekdays.

One such Sunday, you decided to cook some pasta and store the leftovers in food storage containers to use later. Instead of quickly putting the leftover spaghetti in the refrigerator, she left it on the kitchen counter at room temperature for five days.

The autopsy was performed five days after the man’s death. According to the report, he died of significant centrilobular liver necrosis, a condition that causes the closure of important organs.

The rancid pasta and sauce were also sent to the National Reference Laboratory for Foodborne Outbreaks, according to the media site. The laboratory discovered Bacillus cereus in the pasta.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, Bacillus cereus is a microbe recognized for generating toxic toxins capable of causing food poisoning and other serious health consequences.

Bacillus cereus can induce liver failure in severe cases due to a toxin found in starchy foods that defies the effects of heat and persists even after cooking or reheating. According to the National Nutrition Council of the Republic of the Philippines, it is related to a specific type of food illness known as Fried Rice Syndrome (FRS), which was named for its association with Asian food.
