Who is Ankit Tiwari?

An Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer was arrested by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Friday. The DVAC said the officer had been caught “red-handed” accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a doctor in Dindigul district. Ankit Tiwari and his team of Enforcement Directorate officers were reportedly intimidating people and seeking money on the pretext of resolving matters within the Enforcement Directorate, according to an official notification from the authorities. Tamil Nadu DVAC stated in an official statement that “an investigation is underway to elucidate that he had blackmailed/threatened any additional officials who adopted this modus operandi and collected millions of money under the alias of Enforcement Directorate.”

Ankit Tiwari, a 2016 batch officer, has experience working in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Tiwari is employed by the Union government as a law enforcement officer at the Madurai Law Enforcement Department office, according to an official statement issued by DVAC Chennai. “He mentioned a case registered against him at the Dindigul Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department, which has already been resolved,” the DVAC said in its statement. “On October 29, 2023, he contacted an employee of the Dindigul government.”

Further, Ankit Tiwari informed the government official that the Prime Minister’s Office has issued orders for the Enforcement Department to initiate an investigation into this issue. He gave official instructions to the government to report on October 30, 2023 at the Enforcement Directorate headquarters in Madurai. Later, when the government worker went to Madurai, Ankit Tiwari got into his car and offered to settle the dispute saying that he could avoid going to court if he paid Rs 3 million. Tiwari then stated that he had discussed this with his superiors and that they had decided to accept a bribe of Rs 51 lakh. The government employee paid the first installment of the bribe, totaling Rs 20 lakh, on November 1, 2023.
