An altercation occurred between a Kangaroos fan and Laidley during a match against St. Kilda in 2006, following a run of regularly poor performances. National broadcasts of the video were made on television. Later that same night, unrelated to the encounter with Laidley, the fan committed suicide.
When Laidley’s contract was up for renewal in late 2007, former Kangaroos great Wayne Carey criticized Laidley and suggested that another former teammate, John Longmire, take his place. Carey retaliated by labeling Laidley as arrogant after his blunt response, which alluded to Carey’s private issues.
Laidley was arrested and faced a single charge of harassment in May 2020. She did not apply for bail. At the time of her arrest, Laidley allegedly had 0.43 grams of methamphetamine in her bra. She was given a deferral of the engagement and enrolled in a diversion program in November, and her harassment charge was dropped. Laidley reportedly appeared in footage taken while she was restrained by a Victoria Police officer dressed in women’s clothing. The officer was charged with misconduct in public office, as well as unauthorized access and publication of police information in December.
