Recently, the Senate confirmed Olayemi Cardoso as the new governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. On Wednesday, the Nigerian Senate, led by Godswill Akpabio, was reported to have confirmed Dr. Olayemi Cardoso as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. It was revealed that apart from him, four other nominees for the CBN deputy governor positions were also confirmed as Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijio, Philip Ikeazor and Dr. Bala M. Bello. Cardoso reportedly resumed as acting governor of the CBN last week, pending his evaluation and expected confirmation by the Senate. However, his confirmation was met with congratulations from former Bayelsa East Senator, Ben Murray-Bruce, who described it as a transformative period for Nigeria.

It was confirmed that, when asked by members of the Senate during his confirmation process, Cardoso outlined his plans to address the lack of stability in the foreign exchange markets. However, he expressed his intention to prioritize clearing the CBN’s foreign exchange without liquidating it in the short term. Furthermore, Shehu Sani, former Senator of Kaduna Central, shared his expectations of the new CBN governor through social media. Furthermore, Sani urged Cardoso to rescue the naira and restart the country’s monetary policy while avoiding political rice farmers.
