As far as we know about Lefty Driesell’s journey, he began his coaching career at Davidson, where he led the Wildcats to the Southern Conference regular season championship five times and NCAA tournament appearances three times. Finally, Lefty Driesell signed with Maryland in 1969. He coached the Maryland varsity basketball team for over 17 seasons. During his tenure, Maryland won an NIT title in 1972, 2 ACC regular season championships, 3 Sweet 16 appearances, and a trip to the Elite Eight. Lefty Driesell, also known as Charles Grice Driesell, was the first coach to win more than 100 games at four different NCAA Division I schools.
Talking about his wife, he was married to Joyce Lee Gunter Driesell. His wife Joyce was born on November 2, 1933. Joyce was best known for being the wife of a legendary college basketball coach. Leftt and Joyce are said to have been together since their school days. Joyce grew up in Virginia. She was a woman of captivating charm and vivacious spirit. On December 14, 1951, Lefty and Joyce eloped to further cement their relationship. The couple gave birth to four children: Carolyn, Chuck, Pam and Patti. Lefty’s wife was known for graciously hosting delicious meals at her homes in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and Georgia. Additionally, Lefty created a sanctuary of joy and memories in Bethany Beach, DE, with his wife Joyce. Where is his wife? Sadly, Joyce had already passed away three years before Lefty’s death.
