On Tuesday, July 25, 2023, a profound tragedy struck the Sayer family as Martin Sayer, aged 36, passed away unexpectedly. The specific cause of his untimely demise was not disclosed, leaving his family, friends, and the tennis community in shock and mourning. Responding to a 911 call at the Sayer home, both the Christiansburg police and the Christiansburg Rescue Squad were involved, and Virginia Tech confirmed that Martin peacefully passed away in his sleep.
Martin Sayer made an indelible mark on the world of tennis as both a player and an assistant men’s tennis coach. His dedication to the sport and unwavering commitment to the student-athletes at Virginia Tech will always be remembered. During his eight-year tenure as an assistant coach, he played a pivotal role in leading the squad to three NCAA Tournament berths. Moreover, Martin nurtured the talents of players like Joao Monteiro and Ryan Fishback, contributing to their growth and success. Before venturing into coaching, Martin had a successful playing career at Radford University. He earned accolades, being named the Big South Player of the Year on four occasions and regularly participating in the NCAA Singles Tournament.
