Why Félix Verdejo-Sánchez murdered his girlfriend
On Friday, November 3, a federal court in Puerto Rico convicted a former Olympic boxer who had brutally murdered his pregnant partner and their fetus. Félix Verdejo-Sánchez, 30, will be imprisoned for the rest of his life, according to a statement from the United States Department of Justice. A jury found him guilty July 28 of killing Keishla Rodriguez Ortiz, 27, and her unborn child after she was kidnapped. The co-defendant, Luis Antonio Cádiz-Martínez, 32, pleaded guilty on Nov. 28 to carjacking resulting in death and murder of a fetus. His punishment is still pending.
According to the prosecution, on April 29, 2021, Verdejo-Sánchez lured Rodríguez Ortiz into his Dodge Durango. According to Law and Crime, the defendant beat the woman, gave her a narcotic injection and then tied her with metal wire to a cinder block even though she was allegedly two months pregnant at the time. Subsequently, the two defendants took her to the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge, where Rodríguez Ortiz was thrown into the San José lagoon by the Puerto Rican boxer, also known as “El Diamante” or “El Diamante.” Later, according to the prosecution, Verdejo Sánchez entered the lagoon to complete the murder of the victim. Verdejo-Sánchez warned Rodríguez Ortiz not to have a child, according to the victim’s mother.
According to reports, Verdejo was married to Eliz Marie Santiago Sierra for almost eight years; the couple had a daughter named Miranda. According to local media, “his wife, Eliz Santiago Sierra, was also interviewed and confirmed to the authorities that she was aware that Verdejo and Rodríguez Ortiz knew each other and were in a relationship.” According to the special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Juan field office, Joseph González, “there is no way to restore what has been lost in cases like this, regardless of the outcome.”
