Wisconsin Could Become the First State to Name an Official Cocktail – Here’s What It Would Be

Cheeseheads say “Cheers!” to this little libation legislation in the Badger State.

Wisconsin could become the first state to name an official cocktail, thanks to a bipartisan resolution passed Thursday in the Assembly declaring the region’s drink of choice old-fashioned, but with brandy, not traditional whiskey.

The classic cocktail, which usually has bitters and sugar, is livened up at the Dairyland State with crushed cherries and orange slices.

The resolution now heads to the state Senate.

If approved, it will go to Gov. Tony Evers’ desk for a signature to make it official.

As a resolution, not a bill, it will carry no force of law and can be adopted by the Legislature without a hearing or any public input.

The state Assembly this week passed a bipartisan resolution declaring brandy obsolete as the official cocktail of Wisconsin.

The ancient symbol will not be listed in the state’s “Blue Book” like other official state symbols, but many are still happy.

“There are a thousand things about the state of Wisconsin that make us special, and this is just one of them,” the resolution’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Jon Plumer, said before the vote.
