Woman sues for ‘pregnancy discrimination and unfair dismissal’ and court awards her Rs 36 lakhs

Work termination warning after employeelonely news

An employment tribunal heard that her manager told 32-year-old Paulina Bawej that she needed to take a Rs 4 lakh pay cut before receiving threatening messages and being fired. Bawej, who represented herself, received Rs 36 lakhs in compensation after filing a claim for pregnancy discrimination and unfair dismissal.

Huangs Grill, the firm that hired her, owns the Japanese restaurants Sushinoen in Whitechapel, east London, and Taisho in Golders Green, north London. Bawej was hired as deputy director in July 2018, according to the court.

Bawej informed her boss that she was going to have a child shortly after finding out she was pregnant in February 2019. Huang, on the other hand, was reportedly “shocked” by the news, stating that he wanted to consult with co-director Kim.

Subsequently, the 32-year-old pregnant woman was forced to transfer from Taisho to Sushinoen restaurant. Bawej requested that her time be split between the two restaurants, but Ms. Kim “abruptly refused.”

The restaurant manager then requested that Bawej’s salary be reduced by £4,000 a year.

When Bawej raised the issue of pregnancy rights, Kim sent him a text message: “This has nothing to do with pregnancy.” I mean your position. Remember not to forget. Shang tried to give you a chance.

“You will be fired from Taisho and hired at Sushinoen. It was not broadcast. I hired you for Taisho, not Sushinoen. We already have an assistant manager, so I don’t need one, and your salary is above average.”

“As a result, I can’t afford it. It’s all up to you. If you want to attend, that’s fine; if you don’t, that’s fine too.”

Bawej, who has a three-year-old daughter named Mali, said she was “devastated” by the event and has since given up her job in the hospitality industry.
