A woman was found dead on a Los Angeles beach on Friday, just hours after her boyfriend reported her missing.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 31-year-old Jennifer Hanie.
A lifeguard made the grisly discovery around 10:13 a.m. near the shore of Manhattan Beach, a popular park along the South Bay known for surfing.
Hanie was reported missing around 6:40 a.m., just minutes before dawn, according to police.
“The reporting party stated that he last saw his girlfriend near the water line,” Manhattan Beach police said in a statement.
“The informant and his friends searched for the woman and when they couldn’t find her, they called MBPD.”
Police, along with Los Angeles County lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard, launched an intense search for Hanie on the beach and ocean.

It is unclear if Hanie reached shore in the hours after the missing person was reported; His cause of death was not immediately revealed.
