Woman Recreates Grandma’s Vintage Fashion Designs From The 1940s, Video Goes Viral

A creative and passionate woman started on an astonishing journey to breathe life back into the timeless fashion designs of the 1940s in a heartfelt tribute to her grandmother’s legacy. Inspired by her grandmother’s sketches and costumes, passed down through generations, the woman was determined to maintain the essence of this bygone era.

Chicago resident Julia recently created a buzz on social media with her viral video. The clip shows her trying on different clothes from her grandma’s era, and millions of people loved the video.

The clip was originally shared on TikTok and it also went viral on Instagram with over a million views. She is a content creator, and she got inspired by her grandma’s fashion sketches and planned to make them real.

This all started during Covid when she posted about her life on social media like many others.

She and her grandma discovered some of Georgie’s old fashion school design sketches from the 1940s during this period. Everyone in the family knew she’d dabbled in fashion, but Julia told USA Today it wasn’t a story she recounted often.

Georgie told her granddaughter that she was proud of the sketches and wanted them displayed at her burial or submitted to publications so that people would know that fashion was an important part of her life after she died.

Julia, who has requested that her last name not be used for privacy concerns, has constructed 14 of her grandmother’s imagined dresses in the last year, ranging from elaborate ballroom gowns to floor-length evening gowns. Social media exposure led to the two displaying their work during New York Fashion Week in February. Julia’s grandma Georgie had never seen her designs on a runway before.

Georgie was the youngest child of a large family in inner-city Chicago in the 1940s. She was frail and spent most of her childhood unwell. Georgie graduated from high school but could not pursue further schooling then.

Since Georgie and Julia started recording their videos last year, a lot has happened, but one thing that hasn’t altered much is Georgie’s enthusiasm for fashion.

“COVID-19 was extremely difficult for her, as it was for many elderly people. It was highly isolated and hurt her mental health. Being alone all day was difficult for her since she kept coming over. Unless I was at a sleepover or something, I saw her almost every day of my childhood. I believe that doing this, returning to sketching, has helped keep her soul healthier. She appears to be much happier than she was before,” Julia shared.

This passion may have only recently become a full-time career for Julia, but she has spent countless hours modernising her grandmother’s sketches with elegance and style. She can usually complete one design at a time depending on the design and required materials.

Despite her followers’ huge interest in purchasing her grandmother’s creations, Julia’s looks are not for sale. Especially since her grandmother’s ideas were not intended to be mass-produced, Julia is now creating swimming suits for a sustainable swimwear firm that will launch next year.

The most important thing she’s learned from sharing this experience with her grandmother is that it’s never too late to follow your passion.
