PARIS – Paris police shot and seriously injured a woman wearing a hijab who was behaving in a threatening manner and shouting “Allahu Akbar” and “You are all going to die” in a subway station Tuesday morning, they said. Paris police chief Laurent Nunez. .
France is on its highest state of alert after the Oct. 13 killing of a school teacher in a suspected Islamist attack, which officials have linked to what they called a “jihadist atmosphere” linked to the war between Israel and Gaza.
The woman wearing a full veil was shot at the Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand station.
Travelers had reported that she “uttered aggressive jihadist comments,” government spokesman Olivier Veran previously said.
When the police arrived, “they took the woman aside and first asked her to calm down but also to show her hands to show that they did not pose any particular danger,” he added.
“What happened then was that law enforcement officers had no choice but to open fire on this woman given the danger of the situation.”

The fire service, which provided emergency treatment to the woman, said she was shot in the abdomen.
She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was receiving treatment, Police Chief Nunez said, adding that her life was in danger.
Núñez said that the woman’s identity has not yet been confirmed, but that she could be the same person who in 2021 threatened the urban patrols of the anti-terrorist operation Sentinelle and had been admitted to a psychiatric ward for mental health problems.

“This person refused to comply with the summons and the police fired their weapons,” Nunez said, adding that the situation had been “extremely threatening.” The woman had threatened to blow herself up, French media, including Le Parisien, cited prosecutors as saying.
It turned out that the woman was not in possession of explosives at the time she was shot, Nunez said.
The metro station, on RER line C, was evacuated following the incident, police said.
Two investigations were opened, one against the woman and another into the use of weapons by the police.
