World’s ugliest lawn contest crowns woman who says ‘her ex-husband took off with the lawnmower in 2016’

An Australian garden took home first prize in the world’s first ugliest lawn contest.

After receiving submissions for unattractive lawns from around the world, Kathleen Murray’s in Sandford, Tasmania, was selected as the worst looking by a panel of international judges.

“Kathleen Murray’s lawn features deep, dry crevices created by three wild bandicoots (small marsupials endemic to Australia) and not a dust-covered decimeter is wasted in irrigation,” the contest website explains.

“For that, the planet and its dwindling reserves of vital fluid, thank you, Kathleen. Plus those mischievous bandicoots who plunder your property for the greater good.”

The contest was created by the Gotland Region of Sweden, a municipality that covers the entire Swedish island of Gotland, in a joyful effort to promote water conservation.

“It uses humor to shed light on such a serious topic,” its site explains.

“And it rewards those willing to proudly proclaim that theirs is the lawn that deserves looks of disgust from neighbors and applause from everyone.”

The six jurors ranged from a garden designer in Ireland to an architect in New Zealand and an author and copywriter in the US.

The group reviewed nominations from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, France and Croatia.

“It’s quite shocking and amazing,” Murray told The Guardian.

“Bandicoots love to dig, that’s how they find their favorite food. Now my backyard looks like a real-life game of Hungry Hungry Hippo. “I also have an echidna that helps me and some birds.”

Murray and his four teenage children live in an area that has no water mains, so the rainwater his property collects through tanks is too valuable to use on lawns.

If your family runs out of water in the summer, they can wait up to two weeks before receiving a water supply to their home.

Her prize for winning the contest was a used T-shirt that read “Proud Owner of the World’s Ugliest Lawn.”

He’s happy to no longer have to worry about mowing the lawn.

“I used to think bandicoots were wild animals of mass destruction invading my lawn, but now I see that they’ve actually freed me from having to mow it again,” Murray told the outlet.

“I’m all for guilt-free weekends, especially since my ex-husband took off with the lawnmower in 2016.”
