A screenshot mistakenly shared by a Meta employee revealed the new functionality, which will be compatible with Meta’s newest social media app, Threads. Users have been asking for a Trending Topics feature since Threads launched in July this year so they can easily locate the most popular conversation on Twitter/X rival Meta. But immediately after Threads went live, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri told The Verge that the app’s purpose was to serve as a “public square for communities on Instagram,” not to take on the role of Twitter.

Furthermore, Mosseri had stated: “I don’t want to imply otherwise, but politics and hard news are vital. But in my opinion, any additional engagement or cash they can generate from a platform’s point of view is not at all worth the scrutiny, negativity (let’s be honest), or integrity issues that come with them. Many users concluded after reading Mosseri’s comments that the trending topics feature, which has been widely used as a source for breaking news, politics and controversy on Twitter, may never be added to Threads. William Max, the app’s creator, first discovered the new trending topics feature thanks to a screenshot provided by an anonymous Meta employee on Threads.

Below the search box, the new feature lists topics in numerical order and displays the number of articles related to each topic. Notably, Threads only introduced the keyword search feature in a recent release. However, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg alluded to the Trending Topics feature when introducing the update via his Threads profile. “Get excited: search is coming to Thread,” he added. It is currently spreading to most English and Spanish speaking countries. More will follow soon. Stay tuned for the latest news from around the world.
