2-year-old Florida boy suffers serious burns after falling into campfire during camping trip

A 2-year-old Florida boy suffered severe burns to 18% of his body in a freak accident during a camping trip — when he tripped and fell into a fire pit.

Finny, of St. Cloud, was running and playing with a bubble wand on New Year’s Day when he fell backwards into the camp fire pit in Gainesville, Fox 35 reported.

“When I grabbed him, his pants were melting. They were like a nylon material and were melting. They melted and I ripped them off,” her mother, Tabitha Shay, told the outlet.

“He just ran back and fell right into the fire,” Finny’s father, Jeff Strait, told Fox 35.

“You know, what are the chances of that happening? At first it is difficult not to blame yourself.”

Shay said doctors told him that his oldest son, Weston, 11, saved Finny from suffering even worse injuries when he approached the flames to rescue the boy.

“He grabbed Finny’s sweater and said, ‘Mom, it took me a second to process what was happening.’ And then I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ and I just took it out,” Shay told Fox 35.

“Somehow he managed to do that without getting booed, which is a miracle. But we are very, very proud of him. Very proud,” she said.

Finny was rushed to UF Health Shands Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for second- and third-degree burns, according to the outlet.

The parents said they were overwhelmed by the support they received from hospital staff, family and friends.

“I thought I had a handful of friends, and it turns out I have a whole village of friends,” Shay said.

“I am relieved to know how many people have reached out to us for help. “From the bottom of our hearts, we truly appreciate it,” Strait added.

The family has set up a GoFundMe donation page to help with costs.

“Imagine starting the New Year with a phone call from your son telling you that your grandson is going to the hospital because he fell in the campfire. My heart stopped,” Tami Basye wrote in the fundraiser.

He said Finny’s burns covered the back of his legs and also his hand.

“He is expected to make a full recovery thank God, but it will take some time. “My son and his wife have four children and they are all stuck out of town supporting each other,” Basye wrote.

“Both parents miss work. “Once he leaves the hospital, Finny will need continued healing time at home before returning to daycare,” she added.
