80-year-old Russian woman found living with a needle in her brain after her parents’ botched infanticide in World War II

An 80-year-old Russian woman has lived her entire life with a needle measuring more than an inch long lodged in her brain, stunned doctors have revealed.

Doctors on the remote Russian island of Sakhalin in the Pacific Ocean have concluded that the needle was likely evidence of her parents’ failed attempt to kill her as a newborn during World War II.

“These incidents were not uncommon during the famine years: a thin needle was inserted into the fontanelle of a newborn to damage the brain,” the Sakhalin Health Department, which reported the curious case, wrote on its Telegram channel.

“The fontanel closed quickly, hiding evidence of the crime, and the baby died.”

In the case of the elderly patient, the 1.2-inch-long needle pierced her left parietal lobe, but that “did not produce the desired effect,” health officials said.

The girl survived the attempted infanticide and in the years and decades that followed had never complained of headaches due to the needle placed in her brain.

The foreign object was not discovered until this year, after the Sakhalin resident, who has not been identified, went to a clinic to undergo a CT scan.

Doctors have decided not to remove the needle from the brain for fear that it could harm the patient.

Local health officials emphasized that the woman’s health was not at risk.

“His primary care physician is monitoring his condition,” the statement read.
