Amish family’s horse and buggy parked outside Walmart stolen while shopping

A Michigan Amish family’s horse and buggy were stolen outside a Walmart while they were shopping over the weekend, police said.

The family, who has not been publicly identified, was inside the store in Sturgis around 5:30 p.m. Saturday when the suspect left with their transportation, the Sturgis Department of Public Safety said.

“The victims had gone shopping at Walmart and upon leaving they found that their horse and carriage had been stolen,” the official statement reads.

“A truck driver, parked in the Walmart parking lot, had seen a woman steal the stroller…Police had contact with the suspect that same day at Walmart,” he continued.

It is unclear exactly why police previously dealt with the suspect.

Authorities found the stolen horse and buggy that same night and arrested the 31-year-old suspect, whose name has not been publicly identified, at a nearby motel, police said.
