Anti-Semitic abuse leveled at pro-Israel students at Queens College ‘without repercussions’: assemblyman

Anti-Semitism reared its ugly head at CUNY’s Queens College during a pro-Israel rally, sources said Wednesday.

During Monday’s event on the Flushing campus, a pro-Palestinian activist approached Jewish students and shouted, “Go back to Poland! Return to Germany. “That’s where you’re from.”

The tirade, which included lewd gestures, was captured on video.

Anti-Israel protesters also grabbed and trampled Israeli flags, Jewish students complained.

Assemblyman Sam Berger, the Queens College area representative, said he has received complaints from Jewish students and parents about harassment.

“Tensions have been high on campus for several weeks. The Muslim Students Association is publishing anti-Semitic publications. They are using the name of Queens College to spread hate and there are no repercussions,” Berger fumed.

Telling Jewish students to return to Germany and Poland is a hateful and anti-Semitic comment, Berger said.

“I have grandparents who are Holocaust survivors. To hear someone say: ‘Go back to Poland, go back to Germany’ is terrifying,” the assemblyman said.

“We move from disagreement to hate speech. That has to stop. I hope we can reduce the tension. “I don’t want anyone to get hurt.”

Queens College has a considerable number of both Jewish and Muslim students.

QC President Frank Wu previously announced an investigation into harassment and intolerance on campus and denounced the Muslim Student Association for publishing “false and misleading” posts that “denied the brutal actions” Hamas committed against Israeli civilians during the October 7 attack.

He addressed complaints of harassment and discrimination in a letter to the QC community on Wednesday.

“Queens College opposes intolerance in any form; “This includes combating anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, as well as racism and sexism and other discriminatory behaviors that are explicit and implicit,” Wu said.

“We strive to avoid stereotypes that are repeated around us in society while ensuring that individual cases of conduct violations are addressed through applicable policies and processes. “The safety of the university community is paramount and we will continue to investigate reports of any actions that compromise it,” he said.

He said the university has beefed up security patrols and is working closely with District 107 to help protect students and staff. She urged students and employees to report alleged harassment or assault to the Office of Compliance and Diversity.

Other New York universities have also been criticized for alleged anti-Semitism.

Three New York universities — Columbia, Cornell and Cooper Union — are among seven schools investigated by the Department of Education over allegations of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia on campus.

A Cornell student was recently arrested for threatening to kill Jews.

Meanwhile, Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered a separate state investigation into anti-Semitism on the City University of New York campuses.

The Muslim Students Association could not immediately be reached for comment.
