AOC partly blames US sanctions against Venezuelan dictator for migration crisis

New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday partly blamed US sanctions against Venezuela’s dictatorial regime for the migration crisis ravaging the Big Apple and the country.

“The U.S. sanctions that were originally written by Marco Rubio … certainly played a significant role in the displacement of populations toward our southern border,” the Democratic socialist told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday, referring to the Republican senator. from Florida.

The 33-year-old congresswoman argued that the recent surge at the US border took place “shortly after those broad-based sanctions were enacted.”

He later admitted that Venezuelan socialist President Nicolás Maduro is also “absolutely” responsible for the influx.

Maduro, a member of Venezuela’s United Socialist Party, took control of the country in 2013 and has presided over its massive economic collapse, with hyperinflation eclipsing triple digits.

Additionally, its special forces have embarked on thousands of extrajudicial executions, according to the United Nations.

Proponents of U.S. sanctions against Maduro’s allies argue they are punishment for human rights atrocities unfolding in Venezuela.

Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described democratic socialist, maintains that it is time to reevaluate those punitive measures.

“I think we need to reexamine the nature of the sanctions,” he said.

More than 110,000 immigrants have arrived in New York City since spring 2022, many of them flooding homeless shelters and other sites as the Big Apple groans under their weight.

Earlier this month, AOC received a chorus of boos during a press conference about the immigration crisis gripping the city.

Mayor Eric Adams has asked the Biden administration for help, arguing that city services are already overwhelmed.

Notably, President Biden did not meet with Adams during his stop in Manhattan last week for the United Nations General Assembly.

At the national level, the country has also been affected by the crisis.

Authorities have had more than 2.86 million border encounters with migrants so far during fiscal year 2023, which ends Sept. 30, according to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

That number has already surpassed last fiscal year’s record of 2.77 million.

Ocasio-Cortez also weighed in on other hot-button political issues Sunday.

At one point, he called on Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) to resign as he faces a new three-count indictment over bribery allegations, charges he denies.

“It shouldn’t matter if you’re a Republican or a Democrat, the details of this allegation are extremely serious,” he said.

He also talked about plans to ditch his non-union-made Tesla for another union-made electric vehicle brand.

AOC previously said in May 2022, after a Twitter fight with Tesla boss Elon Musk, in which the billionaire CEO jokingly taunted her to “stop flirting with me,” that she was trading in her Tesla. .

“Our [Tesla] “It was purchased during the pandemic… before the vaccine came out,” the congresswoman said Sunday.

“So, traveling between New York and Washington; The safest way we had determined was [a Tesla] EV, but that was before some of the new models that had the range available came to market,” he added.

“In fact, we are now thinking about selling our car.”

Ocasio-Cortez has feuded with Musk in the past and openly supports the United Auto Workers union strike that began earlier this month.

Musk has all but dared the UAW to try to unionize at Tesla factories in the past.

But so far that has not materialized.

Thousands of UAW members are currently striking against Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Stellantis, Chrysler’s parent company.

President Biden and former President Donald Trump are set to make dueling appearances near where some of the workers are striking later this week.
