India celebrates World Students Day on Dr Kalam’s birth anniversary
Dr. Kalam, known as the Indian Missile Man, was the 11th President of India and was a distinguished scientist and administrator, contributing more than four decades of service to the Defense Research and Development Organization.
In 2010, October 15 was designated as World Students’ Day to recognize Dr. Kalam’s notable contributions, particularly in academics and research. Despite reports that the United Nations made the declaration, the celebration remains confined to India and is not observed globally.
Known as the “Missile Man of India” for his pioneering work in aerospace science and appreciated for his dedication as a teacher to his students, Kalam assumed various roles throughout his life.
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, of modest origins and who sold newspapers during his early days, was born on October 15, 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, to Jainulabdeen, a boat owner, and Ashiamma. Even as a child, his fervor for airplanes, rockets and space was evident.
Overcoming numerous challenges, Kalam earned a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) and subsequently rose to prominence in the field of rocket and missile technology.
