Ford lays off 1,250 workers
Stellantis, Chrysler’s parent company, and Ford Motor said Friday they will temporarily lay off 1,250 workers as a result of the United Auto Workers strike. After announcing Friday that it was laying off 700 employees at two Indiana facilities, Stellantis said it now has 1,340 employees on temporary layoffs in three states as a result of the four-week strike. Following UAW strikes at its Kentucky truck plant and Chicago assembly plant, Ford announced it will temporarily lay off 550 more employees. According to Ford, a gearbox plant in Ohio will lose about 300 people, four plants in Michigan will lose about 250, and 12 jobs will also be eliminated in Chicago. Ford has laid off a total of 2,480 workers since the strike began on September 15.
Ford has warned that the strike at its largest production facility in the world, the Kentucky truck plant, could affect a dozen plants. The Detroit Three UAW employees, numbering just over 34,000, are on strike. About 2,300 General Motors employees are on temporary layoff. Ford’s operations as a whole could be significantly affected by the strike at the Kentucky truck plant, which may disrupt both its supply chain and production. Additionally, General Motors is also affected by the UAW workers’ strike at the Detroit Three, as the ongoing labor dispute has already resulted in temporary layoffs of 2,300 workers at General Motors.

UAW strikes, which have hampered manufacturing and caused shortages of essential parts, are to blame for the temporary layoffs. Ford hopes to return to normal as soon as possible, but the duration of the layoffs will depend on how the labor dispute is resolved.
