The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the company’s newest flagship smartwatch. The Ultra 2’s design appears to be very identical to the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra, meaning the most substantial update is on the inside.
Like the new Series 9, the Ultra 2 will be powered by Apple’s new S9 SiP, which has a quad-core neural engine and a second-generation ultra-wideband localization chip. This will enable sophisticated new capabilities, such as on-device Siri processing (to access data from the Health app) and more precise location monitoring. The neural engine will improve dictation accuracy “by up to 25%.”
On the outside, the watch features an updated display from the previous Ultra model, rated at 3,000 nits, which is 50% brighter than the first Ultra and, according to Apple, the brightest display ever on an Apple Watch.
When the smartphone is in low power mode, Apple claims it will last 72 hours. It can be used for recreational diving to a depth of up to 40 meters, as well as free diving, and the Depth app now maintains session logs.
While the Ultra’s hardware has been improved, watchOS 10, which introduces widgets, revamped app iconography, and new mapping and cycling features to the watch interface, will be the biggest update for Apple Watch users this year. Modular Ultra, a new watch face, will use the outer edge of the screen “to present real-time data, such as seconds, altitude or depth.” A new double-tap gesture will make it easier for consumers to start and stop phone calls.
The Ultra 2 is now available for pre-order for $799 and will ship on September 22. Apple unveiled the new watch as part of its “Wonderlust” launch event at Apple Park in Cupertino. Both the Apple Watch Series 9 and the less expensive SE have been updated.
