Arizona man dies on Grand Canyon trail, marking 10th park death this year

A 65-year-old Arizona man was found dead Thursday on a popular Grand Canyon National Park hiking trail, marking the 10th death in the park this year, authorities said.

James Handschy, of Oracle, Arizona, was pronounced dead on Bright Angel Trail.

He was attempting to walk from the South Rim to the river and back, the National Park Service said in a statement.

The Arizona Trail, which is about 18 miles round trip, is considered the most popular hike in the park, but it descends into the canyon, making the uphill hike back much more difficult.

The NPS and the Coconino County Medical Examiner are conducting an investigation into the incident.

The Grand Canyon, the deadliest national park in the country, reportedly records between 10 and 20 deaths on average per year. Of the 10 so far this year, four have been hiking-related, three of which were on the Bright Angel Trail.
