Following World War II, he worked as an investigator of Nazi war crimes and served as the main prosecutor for the US Army at the Einsatzgruppen Trial, one of the 12 Subsequent Nuremberg Trials held in Nuremberg, Germany by the US government. Later, he changed his position to support the creation of an international criminal court and the rule of law globally. He served as an adjunct professor of international law at Pace University from 1985 until 1996.

On March 11, 1920, Ferencz was born into a Jewish family in Csolt, Szatmár County, Kingdom of Hungary, which is near to the ancient Transylvania region and is now a part of Omcuta Mare, Romania. A few months later, as part of the Treaty of Trianon (1920), which was the outcome of World War One, Transylvania was given to Romania. The dictat cost Hungary two-thirds of its land. When Ferencz was ten months old, his family immigrated to the United States in order to flee Romania’s persecution of Hungarian Jews after Romania formally took control of Transylvania and Eastern Hungary, according to Ferencz’s own narrative. The family made its home in New York City, where they resided in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Ferencz earned a scholarship to Harvard Law School thanks to his performance on the criminal law exam while studying crime prevention at City College of New York. He studied at Harvard under Roscoe Pound[7] and furthermore worked as a research assistant for Sheldon Glueck, who was at the time researching a book on war crimes. In 1943, Ferencz received his Harvard degree. He joined the American Army after finishing his education. His military career started out gloomily with a typewriter position at Camp Davis in North Carolina. He couldn’t fire a gun at the time and had no experience using a typewriter.
Ferencz, who was majoring in crime prevention at City College of New York, was awarded a scholarship to Harvard Law School as a result of his success on the criminal law exam. In addition to working as a research assistant for Sheldon Glueck, who was at the time conducting research for a book on war crimes, he studied at Harvard under Roscoe Pound. Ferencz graduated from Harvard in 1943. He completed his education and enlisted in the American Army. Having a typewriter job at Camp Davis in North Carolina was a depressing beginning to his military career. He had never used a typewriter before and couldn’t shoot a rifle.
