President Biden expressed confidence that the US military can shoulder the responsibility of assisting on the battlefield in both the war between Israel and Hamas and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Biden emphasized the importance of the war on Israel and called the United States “the most powerful nation in history” during an interview on CBS “60 Minutes” that will air Sunday night.
“We are the United States of America, for God’s sake, the most powerful nation in history, not in the world, in the history of the world,” Biden declared.
“We have the ability to do this and we have the obligation to do it. “We are the essential nation,” Biden continued. “And if we don’t do it, who does?”
The 80-year-old president also promised to locate missing Americans, which the State Department has put at 15, including at least some who are being held hostage by Hamas.
“We’re going to do everything in our power to find them,” Biden promised. “We’re working hard on it.”
Biden recorded his interview with “60 Minutes” host Scott Pelly last Thursday.
The war broke out after Hamas’ surprise terrorist attack on October 7 against Israel. Some Republicans have since urged the Biden administration to prioritize the Jewish state over Ukraine.

In addition to Hawley, a group of House Republicans have become displeased at the prospect of continued aid to Ukraine.
The American public may also have become skeptical of additional support for Ukraine. Polls have shown mixed results on public support for aid.
Fifty-five percent of American adults did not want Congress to authorize additional aid to Ukraine, compared with 45 percent who support it, according to a CNN poll released in August.
About 63% of the public supported additional military aid to Ukraine, according to a Chicago Global Affairs Council poll released this month.

Since the dawn of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Congress has authorized about $113 billion in support for the war-torn nation.
Not all of that aid has been sent and that figure includes both military and humanitarian support.
The Biden administration has implored Congress to approve more funding for security assistance to Ukraine, due to the decline in authorized military aid.
Congress is currently in a state of paralysis, as the House of Representatives lacks a permanent speaker and is apparently paralyzed when it comes to voting on important legislation.

There appears to be widespread bipartisan support for replenishing Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system.
Additionally, Biden has already sent two aircraft carriers, the USS Eisenhower and the USS Gerald R Ford, along with their strike groups to the eastern Mediterranean.
US officials are interested in deterring other actors such as the terrorist group Hezbollah and Iran (likely through their proxies) from becoming involved in the conflict.
According to local authorities, more than 1,300 Israelis and 2,400 Palestinians have died in the conflict.
This includes at least 29 Americans who have died, according to the US State Department.
