‘Blood-spattered’ Google engineer brutally beat wife to death: prosecutor

A Google software engineer was “spattered with blood” Tuesday after brutally beating his wife to death inside their California home, prosecutors said.

Liren Chen, 27, was allegedly found in a catatonic state with a swollen and bruised hand and the pulverized body of his wife nearby.

The savage crime took place in Santa Clara, a luxurious city in the heart of Silicon Valley and a few kilometers from Google’s headquarters.

A concerned friend called police around 11 a.m. to conduct a welfare check at his home and said that neither Chen nor his wife would answer their phones or answer the door, according to the Santa Clara District Attorney.

The friend, however, could see Chen inside the house “immobile, on his knees, with his hands in the air and his gaze lost.”

Police entered and found his wife dead on the bedroom floor just behind where Chen had been kneeling, authorities said.

He had suffered serious blunt force injuries to the head.

Chen’s clothes, legs, arms and hands were “spattered with blood” and his arms were covered in scratches, according to the district attorney.

His right arm was “extremely swollen and purple.”

Chen was charged with murder, but his arraignment was postponed because he is hospitalized.

Both Chen and his wife, identified by various media outlets as Xuanyi Yu, worked for the technology mega-company.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by what has happened to Xuanyi,” Google spokesperson Bailey Tomson told The Post in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this time and we will work to provide support to them and co-workers who are processing this tragic news.”

According to his LinkedIn profile, Chen was a software engineer working on a YouTube shorts recommendation algorithm for Google.

Both Yu and Chen studied in China at Tsinghua University and the University of California, San Diego, according to their LinkedIn pages.

The shocking murder became national news in China and made the front page of The World Journal, the largest Chinese-language newspaper in the United States, which highlighted unverified rumors that the murder was related to the recent round of heavy layoffs of Google.

“Domestic violence deaths have been declining in our county, but that does not measure the depth and destructiveness of the violence,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement.
