Boston mayor under fire for ‘non-white’ Christmas party for city’s ‘elected people of color’

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu doesn’t dream of a white Christmas party, of course.

An aide mistakenly sent an invitation regarding the Boston Mayor’s Christmas party, specifically for the “elected of color,” to all members of the Boston City Council.

About 15 minutes later, that aide, Denise DosSantos, who serves as the mayor’s City Council relations director, sent a follow-up email pointing out the embarrassing mistake.

“I wanted to apologize for my previous email about a Christmas party tomorrow,” DosSantos wrote.

White councilors were not to receive an invitation.

“I sent it to everyone by accident and I apologize if my email may have caused offense or seemed that way,” the assistant added. “Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.”

The Boston City Council is made up of six minority members and seven white members.

The reveal of the secret “non-white” Christmas party sparked some backlash and caused a stir on social media.

Councilman Frank Baker, a white Democrat, criticized the measure as “unfortunate and divisive” but stressed that it did not affect him personally.

“I really don’t get offended easily,” Baker told the Boston Herald. “To offend me you are going to have to do much more than not invite me to a party.”

“It seems unfortunate to me that with the current temperature, we are moving forward in that division,” Baker said.

Others dodged criticism of the revelry.

Councilman Brian Worrell, a black Democrat who is apparently poised to become vice president of the Council next term, argued that there was nothing out of the ordinary about the party.

“We create space and spaces for all kinds of specific groups in the city and city government,” Worrell told the Boston Herald.

“This is no different, and Elected Officials of Color have been around for over a decade.”

Conservative social media was not very excited about the news of the racially segregated Christmas party.

“Mayor Wu does NOT dream of a white Christmas. And white wine will NOT serve tonight. Or white meat chicken. No pale faces invited to the Parkman House meeting! New England radio host Howie Carr joked about X.

“Ladies and gentlemen (and those who are confused) Just in time for the holiday season. Introducing a new ‘ebonic’ (don’t make fun, it’s cultural) term ‘Chosen of Color,'” said radio host Bo Snerdley.

Earlier this year, Wu became embroiled in controversy over a list of so-called “enemies.”

The Post has contacted Wu’s office for comment.

She became the first woman of color and Asian-American elected to serve as mayor of The Hub in 2021.
