Bryan Kohberger murder trial may be postponed until 2025 as judge denies motion to dismiss charges

Bryan Kohberger’s trial could be delayed until summer 2025 as the judge presiding over the case denied another attempt by the University of Idaho murder suspect to have his charges dismissed.

Kohberger, 29, was on view in the first live broadcast on Friday. The alleged killer was seen wearing a suit with a tie and white shirt while he was sitting next to his lawyer Anne Taylor.

The criminology student has been charged with the deaths of Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, inside their off-campus home, which has since been demolished, in November 2022.

State prosecutors want to begin the trial of the alleged murderer this summer to avoid the school year and stop forcing the victims’ families to relive the pain of the loss of their children.

However, Taylor said he doesn’t think they can be ready for this summer and would like to delay it until the summer of 2025, in addition to requesting a change of location.

Taylor also said he believed the trial could last up to 15 weeks.

The lawyer also said he wanted to make clear that his defense team had not been “sitting” to avoid being ready.

“We haven’t been sitting around waiting,” Taylor told the judge.

However, Judge John Judge said he was “concerned about the delay”.

“This is a complicated case, this could take a long time – longer than any of us thought – and I think this would add additional delay,” he told attendees.

“Do we need one more year?” After Taylor’s lengthy explanation, he questioned why they needed another year and a half to do it, which included reviewing 51 terabytes of data.

Taylor said the earliest it could be ready is March 2025.

“I’m nervous to tell you that I’ll be ready for the summer of 2025,” she said.

State attorneys said that if the trial couldn’t begin this summer, they would prefer the summer of 2025 to avoid the school year.

The first hearing, which was closed to the public, reportedly dealt with his team’s motion to dismiss the grand jury indictment because there was an “error” in the jury instruction. The judge dismissed the motion.

State prosecutors are concerned about prolonging the pain of victims’ families by delaying the trial until 2025. Additionally, Judge John Judge said he was “concerned about the delay.”

Kohberger’s defense has long maintained that the prosecution does not have enough evidence. He also denied her earlier attempt to have the case dismissed.

“This is not our attempt to achieve some delay, this is our attempt to achieve due process,” his defense team argued Friday.

The criminology student’s team has been accused of filing endless motions to prolong the process.

“There is going to be a trial in this case,” a state prosecutor said. “We need to get to a trial in this case.”
