Cardinal George Pell was born to George Arthur and Margaret Lillian Pell (née Burke) on June 8, 1941 in Ballarat, Victoria. His father was an Anglican while his mother was of the Irish Catholic race.
He has two siblings, David Pell, his brother, and Margaret Pell, his sister. She has spent most of her childhood in her birthplace. During that time, she also underwent 24 operations to remove an abscess in her throat.

He completed his studies in Ballarat at Loreto Convent and St. Patrick’s College. He began playing Australian rules football at St. Patrick’s from 1956 to 1959 as a ruckman. He then joined Richmond Football Club and played for them in Australia’s highest level senior football league, VFL Reserves.

The next year, he became the administrator of the Bugaree parish.
