What happened at the circus?

The circus’ controversial practice involved charging 20 yuan (Rs 235) for each photograph of a child sitting on the back of a tiger.

The alarming issue came to light when a video surfaced on social media on December 6, showing a child being lifted onto the back of a rampaging tiger. The tiger’s hind legs were tied to a metal platform, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of the child and the animal.

Despite the potentially dangerous circumstances, the circus did not sedate the tiger.

How did it come to light?

The video showed a disturbing scene in which one person took photographs of the child while others anxiously waited their turn in a long queue.

Just two days after images began circulating on Chinese social media, the Tiandong County Bureau of Culture, Sports, Radio, Television and Tourism investigated the circus’ procedures in response to public outcry and concerns raised by the video.

Authorities revealed that the circus had been holding “unauthorized performances” in Tiandong County’s Hengli Square, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

In response to the investigation, the circus was immediately ordered to stop allowing children to ride tigers.
