Clemson students protest removal of tampons from men’s bathroom

A group of Clemson University students protested the removal of tampon dispensers from library men’s restrooms in response to complaints from a group of conservative students.

Holding brightly colored signs that read “Destigmatize Menstruation” and “Hello, it’s the 21st century,” about 50 students rallied on campus Wednesday to demand school administrators reinstate feminine hygiene dispensers.

The dispensers were removed after Clemson College Republicans complained that they were found inside the library’s men’s bathrooms.

“If you didn’t already know, Clemson University has tampon and pad dispensers in the MEN’S restrooms located in the Cooper Library. We really live in a [clown] world,” the student group published in X on September 13.

Take Back Pride, which organized the protest, said the sanitary products were “unfairly” removed from bathrooms and is calling for them to be reinstated, as well as for College Republicans to be reprimanded for their role in the removal, according to College Fix. .

“Queer people on this campus are not going to magically disappear,” student organizer Pan Tankersley told College Fix.

“So instead of working against us, like removing menstrual products from men’s bathrooms, making people feel unwelcome, there should be support for the community that is already struggling to feel safe here.

“If anything, the university needs to step up and protect its students.”

Take Back Pride claimed the machines were vandalized after the student group complained about them. The dispensers were removed three days after his complaint.

Trevor Tiedeman, president of the conservative group, told WSPA: “Men are men. Women are women. Of course, men cannot menstruate. Of course, we speak out against that. Of course, these people think otherwise, and that’s why they’re here protesting against us.

“We have simply defended biological reality. “They reject what we believe and that is why they want us removed from campus.”

Tiedeman also suggested that the employees behind installing the dispensers should be fired, according to College Fix.

State Rep. April Cromer saw her complaint and reached out to university officials.

Cromer posted a photo of five dispensers lined up in an @ClemsonPrez had these unauthorized dispensers removed ASAP! Thank you. @ClemsonCRs for letting me know about this. Men can never be women, period!

A Clemson spokesperson said the university does not plan to reinstall the machines.

The dispensers were installed last November by the Graduate Student Government, according to student newspaper The Tiger.

Former GSG president Kaitlyn Samons believes the school eliminated the dispensers to stay out of politics and support the South Carolina government.
