CNN announced Thursday that it will host two Republican primary debates in January, forcing the Republican National Committee to make a call on whether to eliminate its rule against candidates participating in forums not sanctioned by the RNC.
CNN’s first debate would take place at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, on January 10, days before the nation’s first caucus on January 15. The second forum would take place on January 21 at St. Anselm College. in Goffstown, NH, two days before the Granite State primary.
The Republican National Committee has not yet announced whether it will hold additional debates, but is rumored to be considering ending the requirement that candidates not participate in outside events. So far this cycle, White House contenders have clashed with the Republican National Committee on numerous occasions for participating in formats that closely resemble formal debates.
A person familiar with RNC decision-making confirmed to The Post that the committee is considering removing the restrictions.
Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie would be interested in participating in the CNN debates, their spokespeople told The Post. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis posted on X that he was “[l]I can’t wait to debate in Iowa!”
The other two major candidates, former President Donald Trump and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, did not immediately respond.

White House hopefuls would have to meet stricter criteria to appear on the CNN stage.
To qualify for the Iowa debate, candidates must achieve a minimum of 10% in three national and/or Iowa polls that meet CNN’s reporting criteria, the network announced. One of the polls has to be a CNN poll of potential Iowa Republican caucusgoers, and the window to qualify closes on January 2.
To debate in New Hampshire, White House hopefuls must also meet a minimum threshold of 10% in three national polls approved by CNN or in New Hampshire polls among likely Republican primary voters. One of the polls has to be a New Hampshire Republican Party poll produced by CNN.
Trump has so far refused to attend any RNC-sanctioned debates and participated in a town hall hosted by Fox News on Tuesday night. Fox News
The window to qualify for the New Hampshire debate closes on January 16, and candidates who finish in the top three positions in the Iowa caucuses will automatically receive an invitation to participate in the Granite State forum, according to CNN.
The RNC did not immediately respond to a question about whether it would allow candidates to participate in CNN debates.
So far, the Republican National Committee has held four debates, and four candidates qualified for the most recent showdown Wednesday night in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
DeSantis, Haley, Ramaswamy and Christie all met the 6% polling and 80,000 unique donor benchmarks proposed by the RNC. Trump decided not to participate, as he has done in all the other debates this cycle.
