Comer wants answers to whether Biden’s classified documents involved countries where Hunter did business

WASHINGTON – House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer on Monday asked special counsel Robert Hur to disclose whether any classified documents were improperly withheld by President Biden following his vice presidential deal with countries where his son Hunter did business. .

Comer (R-Ky.) also asked Hur to detail the scope of his office’s two-day interview with the president last week and “any limitations or scope restrictions during the interview that would have impeded a line of inquiry into evidence (emails, text messages, messages or witness statements) that directly link Joe Biden to problematic foreign payments.”

The Oversight Committee is one of three panels leading the impeachment inquiry into Biden’s role in his family’s overseas businesses.

On September 28, Comer subpoenaed the bank records of Hunter and his first brother James Biden, who regularly involved Joe Biden in their business relationships.

“If any of the classified documents mishandled by President Biden involved countries or individuals who had financial dealings with members of the Biden family or their related companies, the Committee needs access to that information to assess whether our national security has been compromised.” ” wrote Comer a Hur. .

“The Committee is concerned that President Biden may have withheld confidential documents related to specific countries involving his family’s overseas businesses.”

CNN reported in January that 10 classified documents, related to Iran, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, were recovered from Biden’s post-vice presidential office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington. Records reportedly date from 2013 to 2016, during which time Hunter earned up to $1 million a year working for Ukrainian gas company Burisma Holdings, while his father headed the Obama administration’s Ukraine portfolio.

Some of the documents were apparently labeled “top secret.”

Comer wrote that “evidence suggests that President Biden may have used certain members of his family, particularly his son, Hunter Biden, to accumulate millions of dollars from foreign individuals and entities for the benefit of his family and himself.” .

So far, the investigation into classified documents has not been intertwined with the impeachment inquiry into Biden’s regular interaction while vice president with his relatives’ foreign associates.

There is evidence that Joe Biden met, both in DC and abroad, with associates of his relatives from China, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Russia and Ukraine.

An Associated Press poll released Saturday found that 68% of Americans, including 40% of Democrats, say President Biden acted illegally or unethically in his son’s business dealings.

Hunter Biden agreed in June to plead guilty to tax evasion related to some of those companies, but later abandoned the probation-only deal. He pleaded not guilty earlier this month to federal weapons charges and false statements.

Hur is investigating whether President Biden or anyone in his orbit broke the law by mishandling classified records. Another special prosecutor, Jack Smith, criminally charged former President Donald Trump with allegedly hoarding national security information after he left office.

Biden did not publicly disclose the Nov. 2, 2022, discovery of classified documents in his former D.C. office for more than two months, and last week the Oversight Committee released records showing White House aides may have been reviewing the records already in March. 2021.

George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley wrote in an op-ed Saturday in The Hill that the new detail means that “[t]The timeline would now more closely reflect Trump’s timeline regarding knowingly withholding classified material, failure to turn over all classified material despite counsel’s assurances, and alleged false accounts of the discovery of the document.”

A second batch of classified records was found on December 20 inside Biden’s garage in Wilmington, Delaware, next to his classic Corvette. At least three additional searches, including the FBI’s, uncovered more sensitive documents.

“My Corvette is in a locked garage, okay? So it’s not like they’re sitting in the street,” Biden snapped at the time.

The president also claimed the documents are lost papers from his time in the Senate and as vice president, saying at another point in January that “there was no ‘there’ there.”

A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Comer’s request. A spokeswoman for Hur said: “The Department of Justice can confirm receipt of the letter but declines to comment further.”
