Mitchell Starc took 50 wickets from Lasith Malinga in Australia’s first match of the 2023 World Cup, removing India opener Ishan Kishan for a golden duck with six innings to spare.

Malinga took 25 innings to reach 50 wickets in the Cricket World Cups, with Australia’s Glenn McGrath and Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan in second and third respectively with 30 innings.

Fastest century

Several players had threatened Kevin O’Brien’s 50-ball effort against England on that legendary night in Bengaluru in 2011, but it took 12 years and a visit to India to defeat the fastest century.

In a tournament with a dozen centuries in ten matches, Markram’s ability to hold the record until the end of the 2023 tournament is far from guaranteed. In the 2023 Cricket World Cup, Rohit Sharma and Kusal Mendis have already produced hundreds of balls of 63 and 65 respectively, and the event promises high scores even if the wickets get slower with time.

Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique scored world-class centuries to help Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in the most successful chase ever in the history of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in Hyderabad. Stuck in a corner at 37/2 after losing Babar Azam, Shafique’s calm and Rizwan’s presence built a good foundation, combining power and touch to put on 176 with ease.

Shafique eventually fell for 113 (103), but Rizwan (131* off 121) prevailed backed by Iftikhar Ahmed’s sheer force of 22* (10) to chase the mark with 10 balls to spare.

The standing records stood little chance against Rohit Sharma, who led his team to a comfortable victory over Afghanistan in Delhi. Rohit scored 131 off 84 balls to help his team surpass Afghanistan’s 272 and eventually won with 90 balls to spare.

The captain smashed 16 fours and five sixes in his usual mix of chutzpah and poise at the crease, completely dictating the conditions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. With the knock, he surpassed compatriot Sachin Tendulkar’s Cricket World Cup record of seven hundreds.

Compared to Tendulkar’s 44 innings, Rohit has achieved the mark in just 19 innings and three World Cup campaigns.

The five sixes that Rohit scored in Delhi took him to 556 sixes in three formats of international cricket, surpassing Chris Gayle, the previous record holder in the category. Rohit got through the West Indies opener in about 80 fewer innings (472) in all three formats.
