As technology companies engage in an intense war for talent, a fascinating analysis from Switch on Business sheds new light on worker career paths among some of the world’s most prominent technology companies. By mining LinkedIn employment history data, the study reveals both common talent pools and surprising disparities.
To explore job flows, the Switch on Business team collected information from LinkedIn on current employees at 14 major tech companies: Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, IBM, Tesla, Oracle, Netflix, Nvidia, Salesforce, Adobe , Intel and Uber. .
The researchers specifically looked for employees who currently hold positions at one company but previously worked for another company on the list. This allowed them to quantify the bidirectional transitions between each pair of companies.
Aggregating this data exposed the overall share of talent recruited from other tech giants at each company, along with rankings of the most frequent sources of incoming and outgoing employees.
Delving into the technological talent that is channeled to Apple
Although Apple taps other prominent tech companies for only 5.7% of its current workforce, clear patterns emerge in terms of feeder companies.
Intel tops the list, no doubt reflecting Apple’s $1 billion acquisition in 2019 of Intel’s smartphone modem chip organization as part of the push toward proprietary radio chips. But several other technology leaders also serve as common pools of talent flowing to Apple, including:
2. Microsoft 3. Amazon4. Google 5.IBM
Interestingly, Apple disproportionately tends to source employees from companies that specialize more in software and Internet services than hardware engineering. This may indicate an effort to bolster Apple’s expanding ecosystem of services.
Where are most departing Apple employees headed now?
When examining the fate of departing Apple employees, Google occupies a decisive position in first place, attracting almost twice as many former Apple workers as the next company. The most common landing sites include:
1. Google2. Amazon 3. Meta4. microsoft
In particular, the top-ranked companies are Apple’s main competitors in key consumer technology hardware and software markets. This likely reflects valuable experience in areas such as smartphones, mobile apps, streaming content and more transferred between the two companies.
Analysis highlights fascinating talent flows as tech giants attack each other’s organizations. It also reveals variability in hiring patterns, with some companies, such as Apple, hiring employees internally to a greater extent.
