The incident occurred during Shukla’s vacation in Mumbai, when he ordered a Classic Veg Meal Box Regular from Barbeque Nation in Worli. He had no idea that his order would contain unsolicited “extra protein” in the form of a dead rat.
When the food arrived, Shukla started eating it, only to discover a dead rat and cockroaches in the Dal Makhani.
Why was the man hospitalized?
He then developed gastrointestinal problems and sought immediate medical assistance at the civic-run Byl Nair Hospital. Shukla expressed his disappointment and said, “I wanted to experience Mumbai, and I did, going from Prayagraj, but this could be my last trip. I am a Brahmin and a strict vegetarian, but when my order arrived from Barbeque Nation, it was the shock of my life.” .
Dinner included a dead rat and bugs. As reported by the Free Press Journal, “I was hospitalized at Nair Hospital after contracting a foodborne illness.”
How did the restaurant react?
Shukla instantly alerted Barbeque Nation via email, describing the contamination on his plate. He wrote: “I received food, including a rat and insects, and unfortunately I ate most of it. This is simply not acceptable because I am a vegetarian; it is also uncomfortable and I want to vomit. I already vomited and it is constantly running through my head, making me nauseous. “The food industry is supposed to keep us alive, not kill us.”
Although Shukla received a response from the restaurant, no one came to the hospital, so he had to bear the costs. The seemingly indifferent response from ‘Team Manoj CRS, Barbeque Nation’ read: “Dear Guest, We are sincerely sorry for any inconvenience you have experienced and appreciate you taking the time to notify us. I want to tell you that your concerns are of the utmost importance to us.
Six days later, enraged, frustrated and irritated, Shukla took matters into his own hands and filed an FIR against the owner, manager and chef of Barbeque Nation at the Nagpada police station.
Faithful to his commitment to transparency, he even published images of the official documents on social networks. So far there has been no significant update on the case.
