During a visit to Bihar, Delhi-based novelist Neha Sinha reportedly suffered from an excessive telephone bill and Airtel cut her services unexpectedly, leaving her stranded in the border area of Valmiki Nagar.

Sinha recounted his ordeal on social media, claiming that Airtel charged him nearly Rs 1 lakh for international roaming, even though he was in India.

What happened to the woman?

“What a nasty scam! I am in Valmiki Nagar of Bihar. Airtel India has sent me a roaming fee amounting to Rs 1L+. I am an Indian citizen living on Indian soil. Airtel is suspending my connection even though I don’t have overdue bills. She tweeted: “Leaving me stranded!”

Sinha sought help from the Telecom Department and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, citing the unfair situation he found himself in. Her subsequent tweets highlighted the potential dangers to women’s safety from such abrupt service cuts without valid justifications or warnings.

Why did the woman receive a discouraging response from Airtel at first?

When Sinha tried to resolve the situation with Airtel, he reportedly received a discouraging response. “When I borrowed a phone to call Airtel, they told me they couldn’t do anything because this is what the ‘system’ had recorded.” Is the system a deity? “What is this system that abandons real people?” She wondered.

Airtel allegedly requested Rs 1,792 for restoration of its SIM card, prompting Sinha to question the initial cutoff and condemn the “passive-aggressive” manner of customer service.

Comments on the post noted that similar issues are common in border areas, and Sinha could consider filing a complaint with the consumer court. Sinha stated his intention to take further action against Airtel for threatening his security in a remote location, emphasizing that his main issue was the abrupt interruption of services in a potentially dangerous circumstance.

How did Airtel react to the unfortunate incident?

Airtel later apologized to Sinha for the difficulties caused. “Please accept our apology for the inconvenience, Neha. Please share your respective Airtel number via DM so that we can look into this at the earliest,” the telco’s customer service responded on Twitter.
