Derek Chauvin’s family does not know his condition after knife attack in prison: lawyer

Nearly a week after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was stabbed by another inmate at a federal prison in Arizona, authorities have yet to provide details about the attack or his condition to his family or legal team.

Chauvin’s attorney, Greg Erickson, told The Post on Wednesday that his client’s family has not been able to speak with the former police officer, who is serving a 21-year sentence for the murder of George Floyd after he knelt on his neck. during an arrest. provoking protests throughout the country.

“They say he’s stable, but he could also be stable but unconscious, we just don’t know,” Erickson said. “That’s all they told us.

“They have stated that they will not give us any further updates on his condition until a waiver is signed, but they will not present that waiver to him to sign.”

Chauvin was seriously injured Friday after another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson stabbed him around 1:30 p.m., according to the Associated Press.

Erickson said Chauvin felt he was “doing well” in the medium-security federal prison and had not raised any concerns about his safety beyond those associated with being a former law enforcement officer in prison.

“I think he feels threatened 24/7, but I don’t think he indicated that he felt in additional danger,” the attorney told The Post.

Prison employees had to take “life-saving measures” before Chauvin was hospitalized, the Bureau of Prisons said.

The federal agency added that the alleged attacker was also taken to the hospital, but the perpetrator has not yet been identified.

Chauvin, 47, was found guilty in April 2021 of second-degree involuntary murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s death. He was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison on the state charges.

Months later, he pleaded guilty to federal charges of depriving Floyd of his civil rights and was sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Floyd’s death sparked protests that began in the United States and spread around the world over police brutality and racial injustice.

Chauvin recently lost his attempt to appeal his second-degree conviction to the U.S. Supreme Court, which rejected the case.

Erickson said he is exploring other steps he can take to get answers from corrections officials before filing anything with the court.

“The family is 100% extremely frustrated,” Erickson said. “They still have no real information about his medical condition and that is very unusual.”
