From 1995 to 1997, Lalonde worked as a graduate assistant at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where he began his coaching career. Lalonde began working as an assistant coach at Lebanon Valley College in 1998 for two years. He then worked as an assistant coach at Hamilton College for two seasons.

From 2002 to 2006 and 2006 to 2011, Lalonde worked as an assistant coach at Ferris State University and the University of Denver, respectively. From 2011 to 2014, he served as head coach of the Green Bay Gamblers in the United States Hockey League (USHL), compiling a record of 114-56-8-6. In 2012, when the Gamblers finished with a 47-9-2-2 record and won their fourth Clark Cup, he was named USHL Coach of the Year.

Lalonde coached at the Tampa Bay Lightning development camp in 2013. From 2014 to 2016, he was the head coach of the Toledo Walleye team of the ECHL. He captained the Walleye as they won the ECHL regular season championship with a 97-35-7-5 record and two consecutive Brabham Cups. Walleye finished 2014 with a 50-15-5-2 record under his direction, and was named ECHL Coach of the Year, taking home the John Brophy Award. Then, from 2016 to 2018, he led the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL), compiling a record of 69-58-17-8.

From 2018 to 2022, he worked as an assistant coach with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, helping the team win the Stanley Cup in consecutive years in 2020 and 2021. He was named head coach of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings on June 30. , 2022.
