Despite boiling heat in France, Darwen Dashers complete marathon

A team of runners from Darwen Dashers Running Club recently finished a marathon in France; Even though it was very hot, they showed incredible resilience and willpower.

The race, held on a scorching summer day, tested the runners’ physical and mental endurance and demonstrated their dedication to the sport.

In 30+ degree heat, three Darwen Dashers ran a famous marathon in France dressed in costumes and drinking wine at rest stops.

The 42 kilometer Marathon du Medoc passes through the wineries of the Medoc region.

The event, now in its 37th year, requires attendees to dress up and this year’s theme was “gastronomy.”

One of the participants, Chris Cash, said: “At 66 years old, this was surely my last marathon. Naturally, we ran together as a bacon and eggs trio, and with stops for water and local wine, it wasn’t easy in the heat.”

Although it is hot, enough wine will be consumed along the way. Fortunately, these Darreners had a strong training regimen that included long-distance running and drinking wine.

Chris will be traveling to France this summer in honor of his and his wife’s retirement, and had intended to run his 15th marathon with his local running club while he was there.

The Darwen Dashers are a running group who meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm at The Sunnyhurst pub. They welcome runners of all levels and specialize in trail and road racing.

Chris continued: “I’ve wanted to do this marathon for a while and now that my wife is retired we can do it. Two more people wanted to join when I mentioned it to the running club.”

The marathon is characterized by being fun because there is always a theme.

Previously, superheroes were made, with people dressed as Superman and other figures, and Hollywood, with people dressed as Star Wars characters.

Being British, we decided that bacon and eggs would be the ideal costume for this year.

When you arrive, there is a great atmosphere with many people and cooks dressed as hot dogs, some even naked! There were several different pretty dresses.

“You hear about marathons everywhere, but this one is the most intriguing because we were able to taste regional wine in the vineyards along the route.

It took some people a long time, but it was extremely fun.
