The process of transforming analog information into digital information that computers can store, process, and communicate is known as digitization.

We could also affirm that the digitization process transforms information into a digital format. As output a representation of an object, image, sound, text or signal is produced.

Few would question the definition in Gartner’s IT Glossary: ”Digitalization is the process of transition from an analog to a digital form.”

There are several examples of digitization in companies today, as has been the case for many years. Digitization is essential in the business context to manage analog information as well as “paper” activities, where “paper” is a metaphor for analog.
